12% of the French population are regular church goers, a figure that is even lower than in the UK. As a devout heathen, although not an member of the evangelical wing, I am untroubled by this and do enjoy visiting places of worship here and appreciating the rather more florid interiors than is general in the Scots Presbyterian tradition.
I attended a funeral here for the first time today; I’ve been to the occasional Catholic wedding but it’s certainly the first funeral of this denomination that I’ve attended. The deceased was a popular member of the community and the church was full. The priest wore an extremely pretty cape but that seemed the only improvement on the obsequies to which I am accustomed. Given a few rousing hymns they can sometimes be quite fun, but this was not.
