I have been advised that it would be a good thing if I break the habit of a lifetime and start to grow my own vegetables. But neighbours are delighted that I don’t as I am an outlet for their surplus produce. My cupboards bulge with cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, garlic & onions and, this morning, the sorceress came over with courgettes and promised me beans in the near future. I went to examine her garden for the first time, hoping to see it full of mandrakes, henbane, valerian, hemlock, orris & catnip. But it was just veg and a few interesting piles of discarded pots through which I would have quite liked to rootle. She’s 90 this year and, with a downward sweeping motion of her arm, hopes to drop from her perch quite soon.
Bonnie Prince Charlie set forth from France to launch the 1745 Rising in two ships – or three ships. In one, which turned back after being attacked by a British man o’war, were 1,500 Irish volunteers – or 700 hundred – or 100. It’s not just the web that gives contradictory answers, but the printed sources to which I have access as well. In previous books and articles, I have tended to select the answer that suited me from the various sources but it would always be nice to discover what’s accurate. This one looks too difficult, so I may forget it, or use the middle estimate.
